This week, we had the delight of conversing with Greta Meier. Just last week, her debut EP was launched on 3rd Avenue.
Hello Greta! How are you today, and what have you been up to lately?
Hi friends, it is a pleasure to introduce myself. I'm Greta Meier, a DJ and producer from Argentina. This interview allows me to share with you my work but above all, my passion for music.
Can you briefly share when you started producing music, your first piece of equipment or software, and reflect on your debut release?
Since I started on this path, I have been accompanied by my Xkey keyboard, a universal audio card, and the Ableton Live software. However, I strongly believe that the most powerful tool will always be creativity, imagination, and soul in what we do.
Do you have a preference between producing music and DJing?
Playing what we produce will always be the most pleasant sensation, and sharing my productions with the public and connecting with them makes the experience complete.
What do you consider the highlight of your career so far, both as a DJ and a producer?
I think the highlight of my career as a DJ has been having the opportunity to perform the closing of the massive Cosquin Rock festival in Argentina on the main stage. Also, having the support of the maestro Hernan Cattaneo at the closing of his set on Day 1 at the show in Forja, Córdoba, Argentina 2023 is a priceless personal and professional achievement.
Your "Enlightenment EP" was released on 3rd Avenue last week. Could you share the creative journey behind this EP and your reasons for choosing Poli Siufi & Gaston Sosa as remixers?
Sure. The creative journey of Enlightenment began (like all my productions) by seeking inspiration from personal experiences. This inspiration is like the seed of the song, which then begins to feel like the voice of the soul. Subsequently, everything translates into the pursuit of finding the adequate chords and melodies that can convey the desired emotion. The melody becomes the guiding thread, and as a composer, I can't resist resorting to ethereal keyboards or subtle effects that are able to enhance and make the emotionality of the song flow.
This EP could only be complete with the magnificent work of my colleagues Poli Siufi & Gastón Sosa to whom I am deeply grateful for agreeing to be the remixers of this special release.
How did you first learn about 3rd Avenue, and could you mention some of your favorite releases on the label?
For all progressive lovers, it is impossible to ignore the 3rd Avenue label. It is home to great musical pieces by Ruben Karapetyan, Sebastian Sellares, Simply City, and Madloch, among others.
You had the remarkable opportunity to warm up for the maestro Hernan Cattaneo in your hometown of Cordoba. How significant was this experience, and did it alter the way people perceive you as a DJ?
Opening Hernán Cattaneo's most important show of the year at the legendary Forja in Argentina was a unique and extraordinary experience and something I will remember forever. This is an unprecedented production that has transcended every possible experience for the thousands of dancers who attend from all over the world and that can only be carried out thanks to the outstanding work of Buenas Noches Producciones.
As a resident at the renowned "Metrodance" radio station in Argentina, could you provide insights into your role and how your DJ sets there differ from those in clubs or festivals?
As a resident at the renowned "Metrodance" radio station in Argentina, I have the most pleasant commitment to deliver to my audience an exclusive two-hour set, every month, that has only been designed and recorded for them.
You can be part of this experience by listening to them live every second Sunday of each month and then reliving them on my SoundCloud channel.
Many artists have a signature sound or style. How do you balance staying true to your artistic identity while also experimenting and evolving as an artist?
It is a constant search for where my sound reaches the musical maturity that I am looking for, both in the creation of my tracks and in the assembly of each set.
What are some of your favorite record labels, and do you have a specific goal or aspiration to release your music on a particular label in the near future?
I am identified by the sound of various labels that always seek originality in their releases. Some of them are Sudbeat, Bedrock, Innervisions, Perfecto Records, and Anjunadeep.
What advice would you offer to your younger self, considering all the knowledge and experience you've gained in your career so far? Additionally, what advice would you give to aspiring artists who may be reading this interview?
The advice, both for me and for them, would be to always listen to that inner voice and work with conviction. Do not allow barriers to build in our minds and look for what makes us unique, not imitations.
Do you have a day job, or is it possible to make a living solely from your music career?
It has been a path of uncertainty while keeping a parallel job to my career as a DJ, but making decisions that resonated from the heart today allow me to confirm that I was right and that it is possible to make a living from music or any dream if you work with effort and dedication.
Besides music, do you have any other passions or hobbies?
I can't imagine doing anything else that doesn't have to do with music and sharing it with the world.
Could you share some of your all-time favorite tracks or songs that have had a significant impact on your musical journey?
Without a doubt, groups like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin have marked the direction of my path. Some musical pieces that have accompanied me and will continue to do so are:
Album The Dark Side Of The Moon – Pink Floyd
Further – The Chemical Brothers
Album Future Memories – Hernan Cattaneo & Soundexile
We've noticed you have upcoming gigs in Mexico on your DJ agenda. Is this your first time performing outside Argentina? What other exciting plans can we anticipate from you in the coming months and throughout 2024?
It will be my second tour around Latin America, while we anxiously plan my arrival in Europe for 2024.
